Methane number calculation of natural gas mixtures

 

The algorithm is developed for calculation of the methane number for typical natural gas, and also mixtures of natural gas, hydrogen and carbon monoxide.

 

The methane number is calculated on the basis of:

• methane (CH₄),
• ethane (C₂H₆),
• propane (C₃H₈),
• butane (C₄H₁₀),
• hydrogen (H₂₎,
• carbon monoxide (CO),
• carbon dioxide (CO₂) and
• nitrogen (N₂).

The content of n-C₄H₁₀, i-C₄H₁₀, n-C₅H₁₂, i-C₅H₁₂ and C₆+ is added up and calculated as C₄H₁₀. Due to the lack of experimental data the influence of CO is only to be considered as indicative.
